For all you doggie lovers out there, thought you might be interested in our experience with Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP). Our dog, Schautzie, is getting old and a bit paranoid and crazy. She often has these “fits” in the middle of day where she just starts trembling in what appears to be fear and is basically inconsolable. Our vet recommended trying DAP which we bought in the form of a diffuser that you plug into the wall. I quote from the Foster and Smith web site: “Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP) mimic the pheromones the mother dog produces as she is nursing her pups. When your puppy or dog senses this pheromone, even later in life, he is brought back to his peaceful nursing days.”

We picked up our DAP from the vet on July 3 and plugged it in on July 4, a day when many dogs are terrified. We usually are up (and by we, I mean Mary) until 1 or 2 am on the fourth and New Year’s Eve trying to comfort the dog. Tuesday night, with the DAP plugged in, Schautzie was concerned, but not trembling and once we gave her some CALMS, she actually went to sleep. Fairly miraculous, I’d say. Now we just follow her from room to room plugging in the DAP whenever she seems to be distressed.
